My name is Devinia Wainwright, and I was born and grew up here on Yingarrda country. On my dad’s side, my cultural connections come from Erub (Darnley Island) which is in the Eastern Island group of the Torres Strait Islands. Our Aboriginal ancestors come from Maryborough in Qld. My traditional language is Merium Mir and my mums family are English Australian.
 
My passion for art started as a teenager when I would enjoy sketching and drawing some of my favorite musicians. Over the years in my many different roles of employment, I have always integrated art and art projects into my work in many forms from family art activities, community art projects to corporate art projects. All which have played part of bringing people together to share and learn about our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and healing through art.
 
I have been able to pursue my interest in using use art as a form of expression and healing in counselling and expressive art therapy. Art is a powerful resource that allows for self-expression, healing, releasing tension and negative energy, which helps with managing anxiety, depression, emotional regulation and general well-being. I love to use art for healing and connecting with myself and others and as a way of bringing people together.
 
I have been lucky enough to enjoy a variety of art from painting with acrylic on canvas, etching, drawing & illustration and more recently textile printing with acrylic on cotton. I tend to create what intuitively comes to me and my art usually shows my connection to the ocean.
