Karla Tittums
My name is Karla Tittums, I’m a Baiyungu Aboriginal woman and I live in Carnarvon Western Australia, on Yinggarda country.
My paternal side connects me to Baiyungu country, which is north of Carnarvon, from Quobba Station to past the Exmouth Gulf in Western Australia and my maternal side connects me to my Spanish heritage, in the South of Spain.
Since a child I’ve been interested in art & craft, caring for our country & waters and enjoying the lifestyle of the Gascoyne Region.
As an artist I’ve worked with many mediums, and my current art focus is painting and weaving. Weaving has been a way for me to unwind, I collect fibres from country and process them for weaving. I use banana fibre from the banana tree truck, raffia, incorporate feathers, kangaroo leather, re-purposes items into my weaving and utilise various natural materials from country.
Recently I’ve gained recognition through various awards including the Carnarvon Art Awards in 2023 and 2024 for the Best Artwork by an Aboriginal Artist. Exmouth Art Quest 2023 (theme Under Cover of Darkness) for the best works in the Sculpture/Textiles category. And the Cossack Art Awards 2024 with a Highly Commended Recognition (Second Place) for the Open Theme category.
As an artist I own a small Aboriginal business Thanardi Arts & Weaving, which delivers weaving workshops and I sell products at various Community Stalls and Art Centres within the region.
